Musculoskeletal diseases are the leading course of disability among adults in the developed countries, and the cost of this burden is expected to increase with physical inactivity, obesity and an aging population. I am a member of the Lund OA group studying osteoarthritis from gene to patient. We study young and middle-aged with joint injury who are at high risk of developing osteoarthritis. My particular interest is the role of exercise and physical function in developing and treatment of osteoarthritis. We have shown that strong legs prevent development of radiographic signs of osteoarthritis. We have shown that moderate exercise is good for the cartilage in patients at risk of osteoarthritis.
